VORARLBERG AND TIROL

We start and finish in the Austrian mountain town of Bludenz, in Vorarlberg. Bludenz is located in the north of the Alps and is easily accessible by train. We have some serious work to do right away: the long climb to Bielerhöhe (2,037 metres) over the beautiful Silvretta Hochalpenstraße. Then we descend into Tirol where the majestic Kaunertaler Gletscherstraße awaits us. This climb, to 2,743 metres, is one of the most beautiful and challenging Grand Cols in Europe. Muß mit! Austria unfortunately does not have much memorable cycling history but the beauty of the cols more than makes up for this. Austria will enchant you, that’s a promise!

‘In the 4 Ländergiro you don’t have to choose;
we cross four Alpine countries in one go!’

THE ITALIAN TRILOGY WITH THE CIMA COPPI

Ciao tutti! In Italy we more than make up for Austria’s lack of cycling history with the Stelvio, Gavia, Mortirolo trilogy! The Passo dello Stelvio (2,757 metres), with it’s 48 famous tornanti, is Italy’s and this 4LG’s Cima Coppi. In the 2012 Giro d’Italia, Thomas de Gendt won on this legendary col from Bormio (the other flank). This en passant secured him a podium place in the GC! The rugged Passo di Gavia (2,618 metres) is most notorious for the hellish snow stage in 1988. Van der Velde came up first, but Breukink won the stage. On the Passo del Mortirolo (1,857 metres) the Dutch Kruijswijk and Bouwman, among others, once reached the top first. Pantani did this before them, earning him a monument along the road.

SWITZERLAND AND LIECHTENSTEIN

The next part of the 4LG mainly takes place in Switzerland. We cycle from Italy over the Berninapass (2,323 metres) into Switzerland, regularly crossing the Bernina Express railway line along the way. Beware! At the top of the col is the famous Ospizio Bernina, which now serves as a hotel. The Swiss Grand Cols, of course, regularly form the backdrop of the Tour of Switzerland, also known as the fourth grand tour, and are not inferior to the cols in France and Italy in terms of beauty and challenge. Among others, we climb the Lenzerheidepass (1,551 metres) and cycle through Liechtenstein back to Austria. After a final col in Vorarlberg our 4 Ländergiro is complete.

GRAND COLS AROUND THE CORNER

From western and northern Europe, the Vosges are easily accessible. In the morning you sit at home drinking coffee, in the afternoon you get on your bike in Fouday to climb a beautiful Vosges col! This way, you make the most of your precious days off and get into the holiday mood right away. After a short warm-up stage, we continue A Travers les Vosges with the centrally located Col de la Schlucht (1,139 metres), le Petit Ballon (1,163 metres) and Col du Platzerwasel (1,183 metres). These last two cols were not often included in the Tour de France, but they are certainly among the most iconic of the Vosges and they are highly regarded by experienced mountain cyclists. We are now near Munster, a beautiful mountain town known for its smelly cheese.

”In the morning you drink your coffee at home, in the afternoon you climb a Vosges col!”

THE SHELF OF THE PRETTY GIRLS

We continue with the most famous Vosges climb in recent Tour history; la (Super) Planche des Belles Filles, located in Thibaut Pinot’s training grounds. This short, steep climb – with a heavy gravel section in the finale – takes us to an altitude of 1,146 metres. The name is pretty, but refers to a grim history from the Thirty Years’ War. La Planche has been climbed six times in la Grande Boucle and has an impressive list of winners: Froome, Aru, Nibali, Theuns and Pogačar (twice). The most memorable edition was the climbing time trial in the 2020 Tour de France; Pogačar finished first ahead of Dumoulin, surprisingly taking over the yellow jersey from his fellow countryman Roglič and winning his first Tour de France.

MORE BALLOONS AND BEAUTIFUL VILLAGES

The next famous balloon is the Ballon d’Alsace (1,175 metres). This was the first col ever climbed in the Tour de France (in 1905). René Pottier reached the top first. In later editions, Merckx and Thévenet, among others, followed. We are now approaching the roof of A Travers les Vosges and the highest pass in the Vosges mountains; le Grand Ballon (1,343 metres). We opt for the iconic flank with its cobbled hairpin bends. On the last stage, we get to know another side of the Vosges Mountains. We cycle through picturesque vineyards and some of Europe’s most beautiful villages, including Ribeauvillé. Finally, we conclude A Travers les Vosges with a worthy final climb; Champ du Feu (1,099 metres).

Tour de Suisse

Enjoy the beauty and tranquility of the Swiss Alps and discover the breathtaking Grand Cols of the Tour de Suisse.

FROM MEIRINGEN TO MEIRINGEN

Grüetzi! Have you already ticked off quite a few Grand Cols but have you never been to Switzerland? Then it’s about time! Cycle from Meiringen to Meiringen in a prologue and 6 stages. Experience the Swiss beauty and tranquility and climb the breathtaking Grand Cols of the Tour de Suisse. Of course Switzerland is the Alpine country par excellence, but to cyclists the Swiss cols are less known than those in France and Italy. Yet the Tour of Switzerland is an important race that is often called the ‘fourth Grand Tour’. Rightly so in our opinion because the Swiss cols are in no way inferior to those in neighboring countries in terms of challenge and beauty. We climb, among others: Grimselpass, Furkapass, Julierpass, Passo della Spluga, Sankt Gotthardpass, Susenpass and Grosse Scheidegg. Do you choose the black routes? Then you cycle 650 kilometres and conquer 15,000 metres altitude. The red routes count 600 kilometres and a 13,500 metres altitude.

SWISS CLASSICS

We start in Meiringen, near Lake Brienz. Brienz is located in the north of the Alps and is easily accessible from western and northern Europe, also by train. After the prologue we find two of the most beautiful Grand Cols in Europe on the program: the grim Grimselpass (2,164 metres) and the Furkapass (2,429 metres). These Swiss classics are must-rides for every mountain cyclist! The Grimselpass has an impressive finale with winding roads past massive barrages. The Furkapass is best known for the iconic 19th century Belvédère hotel. It is located in a hairpin bend, near the Rhône Glacier. You may also know this col from a chase scene from the James Bond film Goldfinger, from 1964.

‘The Grimselpass and Furkapass are among the most beautiful Grand Cols in Europe and are must-rides for every mountain cyclist.’

LITTLE GETAWAY TO ITALIA

From central Switzerland we move to the east of the country, towards the Italian border. Here we climb the 36 kilometer long Julierpass (2,284 metres), named after the Roman emperor Julius Caesar. We descend the Julier Pass and Malojapass and enter Italy; un doppio per favore! The next highlight on our route is the breathtaking Passo della Spluga (2,114 metres), or Splügenpass in German. This border pass takes us along the beautiful Lago di Montespluga, back to Switzerland. In the 2021 Giro d’Italia, this Grand Col formed the setting for the 20th stage, which was won by Damiano Caruso.

BACK IN TIME

In the last part of the Tour de Suisse the cols remain beautiful! As we climb the Sankt Gotthardpass (2,107 metres), it seems like we are going back in time; the winding road is partly paved with authentic stones and due to the Gotthard tunnel there is very little traffic on the road. Can we make this Grand Col even more beautiful? Yes we can! By mentioning its Italian name: Passo del San Gottardo! The next climb is the Sustenpass (2,224 metres). We seem to be repeating ourselves when we say that this is a beautiful col, but it has to be said! After the descent we arrive back in Meiringen, where one more surprising col awaits us; the Grosse Scheidegg (1,962 metres)!

Across the Alps – North

Across the Alps North

Conquer the Grand Cols of the northern French Alps
and cycle on roads where the pros went before you.

FROM ANNECY TO ANNECY

Salut mes amis, ciao ragazzi! Across the Alps North is a stage tour through the northern French Alps with a little visit to Italy. We start and finish in Annecy, a French Alpine town on the shore of the famous lake of the same name. In a prologue and six stages, you cycle through breathtaking landscapes where a lot of Tour history has been written. We check off the following Grand Cols, among others: Col de la Madeleine, Col du Glandon, l’Alpe d’Huez, Col du Lautaret, Col du Galibier, Col du Mont-Cenis and Col de l’Iseran. If you choose the black routes, you will cover 715 kilometres and conquer 18,000 metres altitude. The red routes are more friendly; 700 kilometres and 17,500 metres altitude. Whatever routes you choose, make sure you are well trained and bring some climbing experience to the start!

FROM ANNECY TO LE BOURG-D’OISANS

We start in Annecy, the cozy capital of the Haute Savoie department. On day one we complete a prologue around Lac d’Annecy. Then we ride in two stages to the famous cycling village of Le Bourg-d’Oisans. Along the way we climb four challenging cols, including Col de la Madeleine (1,993 metres) and Col du Glandon (1,924 metres). The Madeleine is a long, heavy col where the cows are in charge. In the 2002 Tour de France, Michael Boogerd was the first to reach the top on his way to victory at La Plagne. Cycling history for the Dutch! You should not underestimate Col du Glandon; the finale is steep! The descent to Lac du Verney is beautiful. Please don’t try to imitate Tom Pidcock!

‘Enjoy breathtaking landscapes where Tour history was written.’

21 VIRAGES AND ITALIA

From Le Bourg-d’Oisans we climb the famous ‘Dutch mountain’; Alpe d’Huez! The countless cycling stories that have been written on this Grand Col make the Alp a climb that every cyclist must check off, including you! Unfortunately, we have been waiting for many years for a successor to the many Dutch winners (Zoetemelk 2 times, Kuiper, Winnen 2 times, Rooks and Theunisse) on Alpe d’Huez. We continue our way with Col du Lautaret (2,057 metres) and Col du Galibier (2,648 metres). Then we pay Italy a little visit and climb the beautiful Col du Mont-Cenis (2,083 metres). This lesser-known climb, along the Lac du Mont-Cenis, is one of the absolute highlights of Across the Alps North!

TO GREAT HEIGHTS

The next highlight is the so-called roof of Across the Alps North; the majestic Col de l’Iseran. With an altitude of 2,770 metres, this is one of Europe’s highest cols. The beautiful climb and the gentle descent take almost 80 kilometers! Egan Bernal was the first to reach the top in 2019 Tour stage that was unexpectedly canceled during the race due to mudslides. That’s how he won the Tour and not Kruijswijk (or Thomas). Via Bourg-Saint-Maurice we set course for Annecy. Along the way we conquer Col de Aravis (1,487 metres) – a well-known intermediate pass that has been in La Grande Boucle 40 times – and Col de la Croix Fry (1,477 metres). When we see Lac d’Annecy sparkling in the sun, we have almost completed our ordeal!
