GRAVEL GROUP CYCLING TOUR WITH START AND FINISH IN GIRONA
¡Hola! Join our gravel group cycling tour from Girona, Spain’s gravel hotspot. Over five challenging stages, Gravel Volta Girona takes you along some of Catalonia’s finest gravel roads, singletracks and mountain tracks. We ride sections of the iconic Traka routes, but have planned Gravel Volta Girona to avoid any disruption from the Traka events taking place during the same period. Expect a great mix of rugged landscapes, challenging climbs and charming Catalan villages. We start and finish in beautiful, historic Girona, easily accessible by train and plane. The capital of Catalonia is a popular base for both professional and recreational cyclists. Along the way, we climb Els Metges, explore Alta Garrotxa and discover the spectacular coastline of the Costa Brava, which we follow south for a stretch. Finally, we head into the Catalan hinterland, riding gravel roads through a varied landscape on our way back to Girona.
Gravel Volta Girona consists of five stages. On three of the stages, you can choose between a black route or a slightly less demanding red route. If you choose the black route every stage, you’ll cover a total of 460 kilometres and tackle almost 6,200 metres of elevation gain. The red routes add up to 420 kilometres and approximately 5,200 metres of elevation gain. This gravel tour is less demanding than Gravel Track Girona, which follows the Traka 560 route. This join-in tour offers the perfect combination of sporting challenge, adventure and a great group atmosphere. You ride, eat, sleep and enjoy, we take care of the rest! Claim your place and experience this Spanish gravel adventure alongside fellow gravel enthusiasts!

STAGE 1: GIRONA AND GARROTXA
Girona welcomes us with medieval charm and a vibrant cycling culture. It’s the perfect base for our gravel adventure. Consider arriving a day early to soak up the atmosphere in the narrow streets and lively squares of this cycling city. From Girona, we head west, following the river Riu Ter, which later bends north. We ride mainly along smooth gravel roads, partly following the Via Verde, through wooded countryside that gradually climbs. We pass the city of Olot, where the terrain becomes increasingly mountainous. Here, we enter Alta Garrotxa, a volcanic region between the Catalan hinterland and the foothills of the Pyrenees. In the final section, the black route takes on a steep climb from Llocalou before we head towards our finish in Castellfollit de la Roca, spectacularly perched on a basalt cliff.
‘On Gravel Volta Girona, you’ll discover ever-changing landscapes, riding through forests and charming villages, along the rugged coastline and over scenic hills.’
STAGE 2 & 3: ALTA GARROTXA AND CAP DE CREUS
The first part of stage two takes us through Alta Garrotxa. We start by riding to Besalú, a charming medieval town with an iconic Romanesque bridge. Here, the climb to Espinau begins: almost five kilometres at an average gradient of over 10%! After the summit, we pass the beautiful, huge Darnius-Boadella Reservoir. Following country roads and gravel tracks, we continue east towards rural Garriguella. In stage four, we head for the Costa Brava, Catalonia’s rugged coastline. In Llançà, we reach the Mediterranean Sea and follow the coast south. We cross the beautiful Cap de Creus peninsula, with its rugged rock formations and sweeping sea views. Some steep trails require a bit of hike-a-bike. Following this adventurous coastal route, we reach Roses, where we spend the night by the sea.

STAGES 4 & 5: THE COSTA BRAVA, LES GAVARRES AND BACK TO GIRONA
In the first part of stage four, we follow the coast along the Gulf of Roses before heading inland and south. In Sant Pere Pescador, we cross the River Fluvià and shortly afterwards pass through the charming town of Torroella de Montgrí. We ride along flat, smooth gravel roads. Towards the end of the stage, we return to the coast for a hilly finale to Begur, a charming Catalan town perched on a hill, known for its medieval castle and views over the Mediterranean Sea. In the final stage, we leave the coast behind and ride through the Catalan hinterland. We pass through the hilly Les Gavarres nature reserve, riding among cork and pine trees as we climb Els Metges (8.7 km, 6.1%). After a few final climbs, we head towards Girona. Following the River Ter, we ride into the city. ¡Llegada!
